Application Process

Community Affairs SF Application Process

This information is intended to introduce the GATX Corporation, San Francisco office, Contribution Program to potential funding candidates. Details for applying for funding are presented below.

Contribution Guidelines

GATX will make contributions in the areas of culture, health, education and social services. Our focus is on funding the on-going operations of an organization rather than contributing to building programs or endowments. Funding is allocated on a calendar year basis. Following funding, progress reports are required from all recipients. Contribution renewals are not automatic.

In reviewing contribution requests, GATX will consider the organization's:

  • Proven benefit to the community
  • Geographic service area
  • Administrative efficiency
  • Fund raising costs
  • Ability to obtain alternative funding
  • Current GATX employee involvement

Contribution Limitations

In general, GATX does not contribute to:

  • Limited constituencies, such as fraternal, labor or athletic groups
  • Sectarian activities
  • Political activities or lobbying
  • Promotional materials or advertising
  • Capital campaigns, endowment funds or land aquisitions
  • Trips, tours or conferences
  • Private foundations
  • Individuals

Proposal Format

To be considered for a contribution, an organization should submit a written proposal that includes the following information:

  • Organization name, address and phone number.
  • Statement of purpose, service area and history of the organization
  • Number of employees, number of volunteers and the names of current GATX employees involved (if any).
  • Contact person name, title and phone number
  • Names and occupations of the executive director and board of directors
  • Current year's budget and percent of expenses spent on fund raising
  • Latest year's financial statements (audited, if available) or IRS Form 990.
