About Rail

GATX owns or manages approximately 161,000 railcars worldwide. We provide freight cars, tank cars, and locomotives to railroads and shippers throughout North America and Europe. In addition to offering a variety of operating leases, we provide value-adding services including maintenance, fleet management, railcar design, cleaning, inspection, regulatory compliance, residual value guarantees and innovative financing.

GATX is committed to support the restructuring of the European rail industry. GATX Rail Europe was formed to manage, support and coordinate the rail-related investments and business activities GATX has developed in Europe since 1994 as well as to facilitate the growth of new European rail-related investments. We have found that combining our experience, developed from over 100 years of participation in the North American rail market, with a partnering approach to business, results in a good mix of local understanding of customer value, operating expertise, management expertise and experience.

GATX has an ownership interest in Ahaus Alstatter Eisenbahn Cargo AG (AAE Cargo) a leading European freight wagon operating lessor. Headquartered in Switzerland, AAE Cargo owns and operates a fleet of over 20,000 general-purpose wagons rented to state railways, private operators and companies throughout Western and Central Europe.

There are more than 20,000 tank cars in the combined GATX Rail Europe fleet, that are managed and maintained as a single European fleet, providing greater flexibility in supporting our customers' growth and success.
