Responsible Care

Responsible Care®GATX is proud to be certified as a Partner in the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Responsible Care® Partnership Program. Through GATX's own Operational Excellence program we have long focused on maintaining the highest standards regarding the environment, health, safety and security. We are committed to protecting the communities in which we operate. Our participation in the Partnership Program demonstrates our long-term commitment to the chemical industry and aligns us with our key customers' Responsible Care initiatives.

The U.S. chemical industry, through the ACC, adopted the Responsible Care program in 1988, a voluntary initiative aimed at achieving improvements in environmental, health, safety and security performance. The Partnership Program is open to companies that have direct and substantial involvement in the manufacture, use, formulation, distribution, transportation, storage, treatment-disposal and/or sales and marketing of chemicals. As the first U.S. rail leasing company to achieve certification as a Responsible Care Partner, GATX will continue to manage operations consistent with the Guiding Principles of Responsible Care, with a high priority on protection of the environment, our employees and the public. For a description of the Responsible Care® Partnership Program, visit http://www.americanchemistry.com/s_acc/index.asp at the ACC website.

Health & Safety

 Quality Assurance

GATX stays "on track" with Health & Safety for our employees and customers. The Environment, Health & Safety department measures three key areas to determine continued improvement in this area:

  • Training
  • Incident Rate
  • Worker's Compensation Losses

For 11 consecutive years GATX has continuously reduced its OSHA Recordable Incident Rate. GATX is dedicated to keeping Health & Safety a number one priority.

Environment

GATX is committed to protecting the environment and the communities in which our facilities are located. GATX has an annual goal of no spills or unpermitted releases at its maintenance facilities, and that goal was achieved in 2007. In the spirit of Responsible Care, GATX is also committed to initiatives that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2007, our company invested in equipment that led to a significant reduction in emissions of volatile organic carbon compounds (VOC’s) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from coating operations.

Quality Assurance

GATX is committed to providing customers with superior technical support, quality and on-time delivery performance of railcar maintenance services at competitive cost. At GATX, Quality Assurance is defined as Operational Excellence, our program that sets the standards and reflects our commitment to excellence in quality, safety, health, the environment and security. The purpose of Operational Excellence is to ensure the successful fulfillment of customer requirements through prevention, early detection and disposition of nonconforming situations, materials, and railcars, and the continuous improvement of our processes and products. This goal is achieved through the execution of our business processes to meet or exceed our objectives for Customer Success, Safety, Quality, Delivery and Financial Performance.
