Large Cube Open-Top Gondolas
Safely and efficiently ship low-density, dry-bulk commodities such as wood chips for paper products, lightweight scrap metal, steel coils, construction and demolition (C&D) debris and municipal solid waste in these GATX railcars.
Our large gondolas have capacities of 7,000 to 8,000 cubic feet and are designed for bulk products that might not pass through the pocket doors of a standard open-top hopper railcar. They can be unloaded using a rotary dumper or an overhead clamshell crane. If the materials you are transporting would ordinarily “cube out” in an open top hopper car before “weighing out,” this is the railcar for your needs.
Coil Gondolas
Designed to transport hot band, finished and small steel coils, the GATX coil gondola railcars range from 42 to 48 feet in length and are equipped with transverse troughs to accommodate five to nine coils depending on coil diameter. They can handle an estimated load limit of 229,500 pounds based on the 286,000 pound gross rail limit, and have end of car cushioning.
Mill Gondolas
An excellent choice for transporting commodities including iron and steel scrap, steel ingots, coiled steel, sheet steel, pipesand and other steel products, the GATX mill gondola railcars range from 48 feet to 65 feet long and are designed to handle loads from 70 to 109 tons subject to the 286,000 pound gross rail limit. The railcars, which primarily serve the steel industry, come equipped with sides that are five-and-a-half feet high. They can be equipped with cross bars, load restraining devices or wooden troughs for special purpose handling.
To select the right railcar for your needs, answer these questions:
-
What is the product density and would it fill a standard hopper railcar long before reaching maximum tonnage capacity?
-
Is the receiver at the destination capable of top unloading or rotary dumping?
-
What kind of commodity or product is being shipped?
-
Does the cargo need dunning or bracing of load?
-
What is the number of coils to be loaded?
- What is the numbers troughs needed?
