Medium Cube Open-Top Cars

Designed to safely and efficiently transport coal or petroleum coke, GATX offers two open-top railcars to meet any need.

With rotary and non-rotary dump capability and durable steel or aluminum bodies, they can handle up to 120 tons of capacity. We serve the eastern coal car market with steel railcars with 3,300 to 3,800 cubic foot capacity. The GATX railcars designed for the western coal car market are aluminum-bodied with capacities of 4,000 to 4,400 cubic feet.


The GATX railcars feature automatic or manual discharge gauges with three-, four- and five-pocket hopper configurations available.

 

 

To select the right railcar for your needs, answer these questions:

  • Does the receiver only use bottom unloading, or is a dual-purpose rotary-couple required?
  • Does the receiver prefer air-operated, automatic-discharge doors, or manually-operated hopper doors?
  • Will the shipper benefit from a more efficient aluminum car, or is a steel-bodied car preferred?
