Medium- to High-Pressure Cars

Transport chemical and petroleum products safely and efficiently using our pressurized tank cars.

GATX offers capacities ranging from 17,000 to 33,500 gallons and operating pressures up to 600 PSI.  Depending on configuration and commodity, cars may have insulation and thermal protection.  For enhanced safety, all fittings including valves, gauges and safety relief devices are contained in a single housing.

Commodities:

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), carbon dioxide and numerous other petroleum and chemical products are all hauled in pressure cars.  Several factors determine the appropriate car to choose.

To select the right railcar for your needs, answer these questions:

  • What is the hazard class of the commodity you are shipping?
  • Does the commodity require insulation or thermal protection?
  • How and where will the car be loaded and unloaded?  What is the capacity of the loading and unloading facilities to hold and transfer the commodity?
  • What is the density of the commodity?
  • Are there restrictions on any handling railroad with respect to weight or dimensions?
