Overview:

Position Purpose: This is a great opportunity for a high school senior to gain on-the-job training at the GATX Terre Haute railcar maintenance facility. GATX is the leading global provider of railcar leasing and service to customers throughout North America, Europe, and India.

 

This internship provides in-depth safety, quality, and technical skills training that will enable students to assist with repairing and cleaning GATX-owned railcars, including performing maintenance of tank car valves and coils. Students will also gain an overall understanding of railcar maintenance operations.

Responsibilities:

1. Provides assistance to Railcar Mechanic in performing all aspects of Railcar repair as required to meet regulatory, quality and shop production needs. To include, but not limited to the following:

·       Jacks car to remove/replace/disassemble/assemble trucks to repair or gain access to parts needing repair.

·       Removes, replaces, straightens, renews or repairs various car parts such as couplers, gears, center-sills, safety appliances, insulation, jackets, running boards, etc. as required to achieve proper repairs.

·       Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner. Complies with the established safety policies and awareness for safety, and when possible recommends specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.

·       Ensures quality of work performed meets AAR, FRA, GATX and customer guidelines.

·       Completes daily work orders.

2. Performs maintenance of valves and coils as required to meet regulatory, quality and shop production needs. To include but not limited to the following:

·       Follows all company safety rules and procedures.

·       Remove and apply valves and fittings.

·       Performs minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment used.

·       Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner. Complies with the established safety policies and awareness for safety, and when possible recommends specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.

·       Ensures quality of work performed meets AAR, FRA, GATX and customer guidelines.

·       May inspect, estimate, test and rebuild valves in accordance with GATX and the manufacturers’ specifications.

3. Performs cleaning duties to include, but not limited to the following:

·       Performs initial sampling, gathering and measurement of the commodity, including initial opening procedures.

·       Positions cars to cleaning position.

·       Removes all excess commodity from railcars using various tools. Includes handling of drums.

·       Hooks up cleaning equipment to the tank cars by means of the manway, vapor return lines, liquid return lines, etc.

·       Maintains all of the tools and equipment used in the cleaning process to ensure they are in proper working condition.

·       Manually hydro-blasts and cleans areas outside of the railcar removing paint, dirt, scale, and other materials in preparation for paint applications.

Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Complies with established safety policies, support- continuing awareness for safety, and when possible recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.

This position will interact with Managers and Production personnel. The primary impact for this position is repairing the GATX Fleet. This position will become knowledgeable in multiple welding processes while learning AAR Interchange Rules.

 

Education and/or Experience (including certifications):

 

  • Broad Mechanical aptitude required.
  • Basic welding skills preferred.
  • Basic computer skills, with the ability to learn new systems, required.
  • Ability to read, and willingness to, adhere to GATX policies, Safety and Quality procedures, engineering instructions, and FRA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English required.
  • Ability to problem-solve and use sound judgment required.

  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
  • Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
