GATX is looking for an intellectually curious individual to join its Chicago-based team and provide research and analysis to support our business, Marketing, and Customer Experience goals. This role offers unique exposure to market research and data analysis as it relates to gathering, synthesizing, and reporting on online content related to different rail industry trends, commodities, and competitors, as well as assisting with a variety of marketing initiatives.



This is a hybrid internship which will require the employee to work in the office 2-3 days a week throughout the summer. The employee may work remotely the balance of the time.


With oversight and direction from the Manager, Customer Experience and Marketing Analytics and the Senior Director of Customer Experience and Marketing, the Marketing Insights Intern will:

  • Develop strategic briefings on various industries, competitors, and customers
  • Create reports in Power BI using industry and Commercial team data
  • Assist with development of market-related slides and Excel files for GATX leadership use
  • Update PowerPoint-based Sales support material
  • Listen for relevant information and take notes on various earnings calls
  • Compile and send weekly internal newsletter, including data analysis and news gathering
  • Assist with development of commodity and equipment market briefings used in investment review process
  • Participate in and document meetings related to various Customer Experience initiatives
  • Complete long-term research project on rail- or freight-related topic
  • Other ad-hoc research, marketing, and survey projects as needed 

Please note that the responsibilities may change depending on business needs, but a variety of projects will be made available to the Marketing Insights Intern according to proven abilities.


  • Current student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Market Research, Marketing Analytics, Business, Economics, Transportation and Logistics, or a related discipline with proven academic achievement
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications, particularly Power BI (Tableau), MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word
  • Experience managing data and using reporting and data visualization to communicate insights with the ability to effectively present findings to relevant stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and research skills, including ability to gather, organize, and synthesize data from disparate sources
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple short- and long-term projects to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently in hybrid environment and think creatively
  • Well-organized, with strong attention to detail
  • Experience writing for a business/professional audience is preferred, including identifying reputable sources of information and citing them appropriately
