Director – Data Analytics, Reporting and Integration

Overview:

The IT Director – Data Analytics, Reporting and Integration partners with both the business and IT Leaders to provide leadership and oversee the alignment of projects and production support activities related to data analytics, warehousing, reporting, and integration applications and technology.

 

The incumbent is responsible for assessing and recommending data analytic solutions to solve business problems or to get better insights into business opportunities, as well as solutions in support of data warehousing, reporting and integration. In addition, the individual is responsible for building a team with the proper skills and abilities to implement and support the technologies chosen as well as the projects launched. Resources from this group will be relied upon as integral team members for transformational projects.

 

The incumbent will be relied upon to research and determine proper standards, technologies and practices in the data analytics, reporting, warehousing, and integration space. This position requires close coordination with business leadership, other IT Directors and the CIO, setting direction and providing support for the technology specific to this space.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as a strategic partner with Business and IT functions, helping to enable improvements and efficiencies in their operations.
    • Integrate a broad range of ideas and data to make complex technical and business decisions in support of the development of practical, workable, and cost-effective solutions to business problems and opportunities
    • Effectively manage differing approaches, viewpoints, and expectations of project and committee members to develop goals and objectives with business value; accomplish goals and objectives on schedule through successful collaboration and team work.
    • Organize and direct quality work efforts; provide overall functional and/or administrative direction
  • Prioritize and oversee agile execution of enterprise-wide business intelligence, data analysis, warehousing, data governance, and data science initiatives
    • Create, manage and motivate the necessary technology teams, including use of external skills as needed. For example, analysts, data engineers, architects, data scientists, report developers
    • Estimate associated timing and cost (Capital and SG&A).
    • Recommend solutions in support of IT initiatives.
    • Provide pertinent input to project plan activities, including inter/cross dependencies
  • Communicate the business value of analytics wins and illuminate the art of the possible for stakeholders
  • Oversee the entire analytical product lifecycle, from POC to production to continuous improvement and support
  • Lead the curation of new data sources to support new solutions and enhance existing solutions
  • Make technical decisions based on business value and buy-in
  • Responsible for selecting the proper technology and building a team capable of implementing and supporting advanced data analytics initiatives.
    • Identify and assist in the procurement of the right long-term solution for GATX data analysis needs.
    • Consolidate/rationalize tools or applications owned and used by GATX today.
    • Ensure staffs have the right skills for implementing and supporting the chosen technologies.
    • Have a mastery of advanced data analytics concepts and techniques and the ability to serve as the subject matter expert in related discussions
  • Serve as IT lead for understanding and improving business data quality.
    • Deploy necessary tools and business processes for analyzing, reporting, and monitoring data quality.
    • Responsible for monitoring and resolving data issues.
    • Capable of describing, in business terms, the issues/implications associated with data quality problems.
  • Remain current on technology developments (e.g. AI, Machine Learning etc.) that could provide value to GATX (i.e. improve business efficiency, profitability etc.).
  • Establish guidance and enforce proper IT Governance policies and procedures
    • Enforce IT standards.
    • Enforce change control procedures.
    • Enforce effort prioritization and approval.
  • Identify and communicate high level IT risks and recommend approaches for mitigating exposure to those risks.
  • Active participant in business and IT Strategic Planning activities
  • Ensure that proper system documentation is created and maintained (e.g. Training material, process flows, policies/procedures, job aides, etc.).

The Director – Data Analytics, Reporting and Integration works as a strategic partner with Business and IT functions, communicating up to the highest levels within the GATX organization,  helping to enable improvements and efficiencies in their operations.

 

 

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • 10 years leading technical data teams bringing value to business stakeholders
  • Advanced degree in field related to Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience
  • Experience leading agile development teams
  • Experience with on-premise and Cloud analytics tools (e.g. SQL Server, SSIS, Power BI, Synapse, Datalake, Azure ML, Power BI, Snowflake, Databricks)
  • Fluency in SQL and Python
  • Experience creating data science products in an MLops framework

  • Ability to recognize and manage balance between competing needs and limited resources.
