The person in this HYBRID role utilizes quality and industrial engineering techniques as well as other analytical methods to identify improvement opportunities and drive improvement within our shop network. This position will analyze quality data and lead the recommendation, development, and implementation of corrective actions. The Quality Assurance Engineer will maintain the quality documentation system and serve as a cross-functional team leader for quality improvement projects. This position will perform process validations, analysis of data and review effectiveness of corrective actions.

Responsibilities:

Key Job Activities:

  • Analyze data from various quality inputs (including, but not limited to: nonconformance reports, customer complaints, and internal quality data) to determine trends and systemic issues. Prepare and issue reports based on information and analysis. Identify areas for system improvements.  25%
  • Develop and communicate quality metrics and assist in the implementation of reduction plans based upon KPI trends. Serve as the liaison for researching, analyzing, and communicating on quality related issues.  20%
  • Interface with plant and corporate groups to implement new and/or revised processes and procedures. Develop, review and manage approval process of quality documents (e.g. procedures, forms, etc.). 20%
  • Develop, control and communicate documents pertinent to the quality system to all affected personnel at the corporate and the shop level.  15%
  • Lead cross-functional teams to evaluate, define, and improve our processes to ensure alignment and achievement of GATX Rail Operations Initiatives.  10%
  • Support systems used by the Quality department. Including, but not limited to: PeopleSoft, GAGEpack, ETQ, SharePoint, Power BI, etc.   10%

 

Scope of Work:

This position will interact with senior staff, functional leaders, service center managers, and operations staff throughout the organization. Key functional groups and customers for this position are Quality, Continuous Improvement, Production, Purchasing, Customer Service, Engineering, and the Contract Shop Network, among others; therefore, effective interpersonal and communications skills are crucial to success in this role. The candidate must also be able to analyze, prepare data and present recommendations and decisions in a professional, clear and concise manner. This position will focus on extensive research and analysis of quality related issues. It is an independent, cross-functional, key position that will contribute knowledge and influence to the GATX organization in order to achieve our quality initiatives.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Quality Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline required.
  • Three to five years of experience in related position required, preferably in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Quality system experience required (AAR M-1003, TQM, ISO 9000, etc.)
  • Ability to extract, compile, and analyze data using standard statistical tools.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Suite and Excel QI Macros
  • Power BI, SharePoint and InfoPath proficiency is desirable
  • Experience in the use of quality management software is desirable
  • Proficiency with ETQ Reliance is preferred
  • Experience in metrology and use of gauge calibration management software is desirable
  • Proficiency with GAGEpack or similar systems is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in applying structured problem solving practices, root cause analysis methods and quality improvement initiatives such as Lean or Six Sigma; formal training and/or relevant certification is desirable

Travel required:

  • Moderate travel as necessary to visit repair facilities, customers and attend industry meetings (approx. 10%)
  • Must be physically able to climb on equipment within a maintenance facility, stand on feet for extended periods in a plant environment.
