Overview:

Position Purpose: To provide a safe and secure environment for our employees, contractors, visitors and the surrounding community in cooperation with facility and corporate Operations and Safety objectives, targets and goals. To ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulatory and Responsible Care requirements. To understand and strategically reduce Safety risk to all stakeholders via a proactive and continuous improvement approach.

 

 

Scope of Work: This position will interact with senior executives, functional leaders, service center managers, and operations staff throughout the organization.  Key functional groups and customers for this position are EH&S, Quality, Operations, Inspections, Materials, NDE, Customer Service, Engineering, external regulatory agencies, and Maintenance Procurement among others.

 

This position will focus on research and analysis of environmental, health, safety, and quality related issues.  It is an independent, cross-functional key position that contributes significant knowledge and influence to the GATX Operations group in order to achieve our defined initiatives.

 

Direct reports include a Safety Coordinator and the Safety Committee.

Responsibilities:

1.  Lead and manage the maintenance of the Service Center’s health and safety program.  Maintain strong presence on the shop floor; perform regular facility inspections to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and GATX regulations; and ensure that all facility employees receive required Safety training. Manage incidents and injury claims whenever they occur at a 3-shift operation.

2.  Analyze and communicate safety performance (incident rate, training, worker’s compensation) to all appropriate supervisors and managers.  Establish and implement improvement plans based upon analysis to satisfy GATX Operations Group’s Initiatives and site-specific needs.

3.  Control and communicate documents pertinent to the H&S systems to all affected personnel including, but not limited to H&S policies and procedures and all regulatory and corporate reporting requirements.

4.  Support the Environmental Manager as needed ( e.g., training, inspections, etc.). Communicating on H&S issues to regulatory bodies and GATX Commercial and Operations functions.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):

 

  • Bachelor’s degree with concentration in Safety, Science, Engineering, Operations or related field, or Associate’s Degree with equivalent experience.
  • 5+ of experience in a production environment with safety responsibility.
  • Specific knowledge and experience with confined space entry, elevated work hazards, incident prevention, are a plus
  • Working knowledge of US and Texas safety regulations and Worker’s Compensation procedures.
  • Responsible Care Management System and/or SafeStart experience is a plus.
  • Railroad or tank cleaning experience is a plus.
  • Experience managing COVID-19 exposure scenarios and response
  • Experience developing and delivering safety training
  • Union experience is a plus

Other (i.e., physical requirements, travel, etc. that is not covered above):

 

  • Physical requirements include outdoor work, climbing stairs and some heavy lifting.
  • Minimal travel will be required within the US and Canada.
