Overview:

This position leads the financial planning and project management activities for capital investments at GATX’s owned repair facilities.  This role works directly with 8 fixed repair locations and 2 customer sites and will coordinate closely with the Facility Engineering, Procurement and Finance functions to prioritize and execute on significant capital projects and manage the approval process for all capital investments related to the facilities. The role will also lead the monthly financial reporting & analysis processes, as well as the annual budgeting activities for GATX’s owned repair facilities.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the planning, approval and implementation process for all major capital projects across all owned repair facilities.
  • Work with shop leadership and Manufacturing Engineering to identify and prioritize capital investments.
  • Investments can include track, key repair equipment (cleaning, finishing, etc.), employee facilities and shop infrastructure equipment (buildings, compressors, etc.).
  • Lead the continued development of the capital investment approval process and work with shop leaders to assist in the investment  analysis and creation of capital approval requests.
  • Develop financial models to assess the costs and benefits of capital projects.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Manufacturing Engineering to identify preferred vendors and equipment
  • Develop and manage the ongoing reporting of capital projects to the Operations leadership team.
  • Perform the project manager role for major capital projects for both individual facilities and multiple facilities/network capital initiatives (IT projects, equipment standardization, etc.)
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement to determine equipment specifications, costs and benefits.
  • Oversee the process for capital expenditure approvals and investment justifications. Prepare detailed written proposals and guide the transactions through the approval process.
  • Lead the project execution phase with close collaboration with Manufacturing Engineering to provide timely updates to Operations Management.
  1. Lead all aspects of financial reporting, analysis and controls for GATX Repair Facilities.
  • Develop and continuously improve financial statements (focusing on P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statements) and key operating metrics reporting at the repair facilities.
  • Lead and prepare monthly P&L variance analytics.
  • Lead and enhance the facilities’ indirect expense analysis and  implement associated cost controls.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency in reporting of productivity, efficiency, utilization, standard hours, repair revenue, and other key metrics across the facilities.
  • Work with Facility Finance, Corporate Accounting and Internal Audit on financial compliance and internal controls activities as required.
  • Lead the coordination and development of the budget and forecast model for the supported facilities.
  • Produce monthly and quarterly budget reports on actuals compared to plan with corresponding variance analytics.
  • Present budget and forecasts to the Operations Management team as required.

This role works across Operations at different levels including directly with facilities and facility managers.  This role will also have significant interaction with VPs and Managers across the Operations team, as well as other corporate functional areas including IT, Accounting and Legal.   The individual will have the support of the Operations team while being responsible for ensuring that projects are thoroughly analyzed, significant issues are fully disclosed and that those presented for approval constitute quality investments.

 

Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):

  • Undergraduate degree required; preferably in Finance or Accounting
  • MBA highly desirable
  • An understanding of accounting and financial analysis for capital investments preferred
  • Prior work experience in a service or manufacturing environment preferred

Other:

 

  • Moderate amount of travel as required to visit facilities and vendors, up to 25%
