MC/Switch Operator/Locomotive Conductor-3rd Shift

Swich Operator Conductor Position Purpose:
Directs locomotive operator in the movement and switching of cars, and spot cars inside the facility.
Locomotive Operator Position Purpose:
Combined job of alternately operating diesel locomotive (operator) and directive locomotive operator (switchman) in the movement and switching of cars, and spot cars inside the facility. When not operating locomotive will direct locomotive operator to move and spot freight cars inside the facility.
This position will be 3rd shift (10:00pm - 6:30am, Monday-Friday).
Responsibilities:
Operations of Switchman:
- Obtains instructions and directions as to movement and placement of freight cars on
plant switching. - Couples and uncouples cars, throws switches and signals locomotive operator for the
switching and spotting of cars throughout the plant. - Precedes railroad equipment when entering or leaving buildings, at crossings, and
signals when safe to move. - Assists locomotive operator on maintenance of locomotive.
- Checks to see that outlet caps and dome covers are in place when tank cars are
switched. - Comply with the established safety policies, support-continuing awareness for safety,
and when possible recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety
policies and programs
Operations of Locomotive:
- Operated locomotive to move, switch and spot cars in the plant area.
- Checks locomotive to make sure engine is supplied with fuel and to see that air and oil pressure gauges are in proper working order.
- Receives, interprets and acts in accordance with Switchman’s hand signals.
- Reports all mechanical failures and makes minor repairs.
- Assists Maintenance man on plant maintenance work.
- Makes adjustments and minor repairs to small power, mechanical tools and repairs air hoses.
Both Roles:
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong communication skills
- Communicate with supervisor as needed.
- Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Comply with the established safety policies, support-continuing awareness for safety,
and when possible recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety
policies and programs.
Qualifications:
• Ability to read and interpret documents.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers.
• Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results
• Ability to read, access and interpret switch diagrams, Excel spreadsheets and company policies.
• Ability to work well with others in a positive manner
• Knowledgeable of rail-car repairs.
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Basic computer knowledge and strong communication skills — experience.
• Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Must be able to walk for extended periods of time (possibly over 8 hours per day)
• Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
• Must be able to lift 41 pounds and (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
• Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
• Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
• Must be able to work in extreme temperature environment

The starting hourly rate for this position is $29.73 per hour.
