Switching Operator
Maintenance/Repair

Overview:

Position Purpose: Responsible for the movement and spotting of railcars in a safe and timely manner according to operational needs.

Responsibilities:

 

Key Activities

 

  1. Work with Repair Center Manager, ME, and other key roles to efficiently move, switch and spot cars in the plant and/or yard.  Work with Production to create and execute the plan for movement and placement of cars in the yard and work centers.
  1. Maintain switching equipment per preventative maintenance schedules.
  1. Assist with plant railcar repair work or other maintenance when necessary.

 

Scope of Work: The individual filling this position will interact with supervisors, the EHS and Quality Coordinator(s), railroad agents and customers.  The primary area of impact for this position is safe movement of railcars and timely movement to meet production needs.  The decisions made by this individual are within the stated requirements of switching policy in place at the location.  This position has no direct reports.

 

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):

 

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion (or ability to complete shortly after hiring) of GATX Switching certification.

 

Key Competencies (non-technical behavioral skills, i.e. presentation, negotiation, customer service skills), in priority order.  Select from “key competencies for job descriptions” list:

 

  • Ability to read, access and interpret switch diagrams, Excel spreadsheets and company policies.
  • Ability to work well with others in a positive manner

 

 

Other (i.e., physical requirements, travel, etc. that is not covered above):

 

  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time(possibly over 8 hours per day)
  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
  • Must be able to push / pull (horizontally ) up to 140 pounds
  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environment
