Sr Manager Quality Assurance

In this role, you will provide leadership and direction of the quality system to influence and help the Service Center Manager implement the GATX Maintenance Group Strategic Initiatives across one of GATX’s largest facilities, operating 3-shifts and shipping ~4,000 cars per year. The focus will be to continuously improve quality in the facility while maintaining compliance within the quality maintenance system and its components to ensure compliance to regulatory and GATX requirements.
This person will be the point person responsible for investigating and resolving car issues, customer complaints, and audit exceptions.
This position will lead a team of Quality personnel to drive data analysis, investigations, and improvement opportunities. This individual will operate within the Goal Deployment systems to drive results. This position is highly cross-functional within the management team, and a key position that contributes significant knowledge and influence to the GATX Maintenance Group in order to achieve our defined quality and overall facility goals.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the execution of the quality system at the facility, including all processes to ensure that the cars produced satisfy all given customer, regulatory, and Company requirements. Communicates work area status/activities to the Production Manager(s). Communicates with other work areas to facilitate smooth car flow. Responsible for shift transition between shifts and shift pass down.
- Analyze trending data for items such as customer rejects, blue/red tags, audits, etc. and implement containment actions where needed as well as long term corrective actions wherever possible. Be the spokesperson for quality for the facility, developing communication on issues and engagement on corrective action.
- Oversee and lead the quality audit process in the facility, including, but not limited to, regulatory audits, internal audits, external audits and process audits, in order to continuously improve all aspects of the quality process. Lead or participate in other facility internal audits.
- Be responsible for compliance and site-wide communication for and implementation of all documents pertinent to the quality system. This includes: Quality Procedures, Fleet Maintenance Instructions, Engineering Notices, Improvement Orders, AAR Circular Letters, and Qualification records.
- Be a leader on cross-functional teams to evaluate, define, and improve our processes to ensure alignment and achievement of GATX Rail Maintenance Group’s Initiatives at the site and network wide.
- Serve as the technical liaison for researching, analyzing, and communicating on quality related issues to regulatory bodies and GATX Rail Leasing and Maintenance functions.
This position will interact with senior executives, functional leaders, service center managers, and operations staff throughout the organization. Key functional groups or customers for this position are Quality, Operations, Inspection, Materials, NDE, Customer Service, Engineering, and Maintenance Procurement among others.
This position will focus on extensive research and analysis of quality and maintenance related issues. It is an independent, cross-functional, key position that contributes significant knowledge and influence to the GATX Maintenance Group in order to achieve our defined initiatives.
Direct reports may include Quality Supervisors, Quality Specialists, Outbound Inspectors, Quality Control Leads.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree with concentration in Engineering, Operations or related field, or Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years’ experience in related industry, including quality experience (TQM, ISO 9000, M1003, SPC, Preventative Maintenance programs, etc.)
- Previous supervisory experience required.
- Must have successfully completed (or be able to complete in first year) one of the following: AAR Auditor Qualified Advanced Class, Excel Auditor-Internal Auditing for ISO 9001 or, ASQ Certified Auditor.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

- 5-10% Travel may be required to audit sites or other facilities
Salary range:
As of the post date, the salary range for this position is:111800.00 USD - 130000.00 USD
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
