The Data Visualization Engineer & Analyst is a hybrid role, reporting to the Director, Insights Delivery. The position will work with GATX business end users and functional leaders to provide guidance on the development of business-facing analytic visualization solutions and implement them in PowerBI. The incumbent is responsible for 1) performing data and requirements analysis activities in support of the planning, development, testing, and deployment of business intelligence dashboards, reports, models, and extracts; 2) creating wireframe designs to meet those requirements; and 3) implementing dashboards according to the wireframe designs in the Microsoft Power Platform. The position partners with peers within the IT group, Business and across the Data, Analytics, Reporting, & Integration team.

Responsibilities:
- Core business analysis activities for analytic solutions
- Assess, analyze, refine, and document requirements for analytic solutions including Microsoft PowerBI dashboards, reports, data integration and underlying data infrastructure (database objects, data flows/pipelines, analytic models). This includes collecting requirements directly from business, delivery of mockups to facilitate visualization of end state, and drafting of solution narratives.
- Craft and recommend solutions with a focus on providing business value.
- Estimate the effort and duration of analysis activities related to new request and defect fixes.
- Manage the development lifecycle and user acceptance testing leveraging the Jira Service Management platform and workflows.
- Learn the business processes for which application integration and insights are needed/required.
- Understand the technical aspects of application touchpoints.
- Support change management initiatives by collaborating with cross-functional teams to assess the impact of data-driven transformations, assist in stakeholder communications, and help develop training and documentation to ensure smooth adoption of new analytics tools, processes, and systems.
- Power Platform Design & Implementation
- Play a key role in all phases of the software development life cycle (SDLC) as they relate to integration and development of insights. This includes shepherding requests end-to-end through the SDLC (from inception through production deployment).
- Lead the visualization wireframe design process with analytics consumers for reports and dashboards. This includes the iterative creation and refinement of design mock-ups using Miro, Figma, Mural and similar tools.
- Implementation and unit testing of reports and dashboards in the Microsoft PowerBI tool, adhering to GATX’s documented design standards.
- Analysis of data (both raw source data and data refined within our analytic environment) in furtherance of dashboard and report development efforts.
- Collaboration with data engineers, cloud engineers, and other members of the IT-DARI team in furtherance of these implementation efforts.
- Work with IT and business stakeholders through Integration and User Acceptance Testing.
- Resolve technically complex assignments.
- Develop and support all aspects of reporting development, including creating dashboards, understanding data workflow, data manipulations, etc.
- Support existing implementations including maintenance and production support. Maintain knowledge of established service level agreements and deliver support in a manner that meets expectations. Participate in implementing processes designed to reduce the number of support incidents and improve customer satisfaction. Support business stakeholders and data analysts as needed. Monitor daily production processes and partner with IT administrators to resolve problems.
- Provide production support for insights and environments when required. Use troubleshooting and critical thinking skills to diagnose issues and failures, determine possible solutions, perform triage to enable business to function and implement long term solutions where necessary to avoid future disruptions. The percentage of time spent on this activity will vary. This may require availability during non-business hours.
- Investigate and stay abreast of new technologies and innovations. Support and maintain software environments and tools used for application integration. Consistently employ and adhere to adopted processes, including Agile Methodology for custom-developed applications, so that the software/insights delivered will meet the time, cost and quality targets defined by the business. Adopt and institute best practices as directed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a quantitative field (e.g., Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Math, Sciences, Engineering) with concentrations in Data Analysis, Data Integration/ETL, Data Modeling and Data Warehousing as plus.
- 9+ years of overall IT experience. 6+ years of experience using Microsoft PowerBI to design and develop Business Intelligence solutions that include data summaries, analytic functions, basic and advanced visualizations, clustering, and time series analysis.
- Experience using advance PowerBI features including development DAX, PowerBI dataflows, and data modeling best practices.
- Experience in data story-telling; creating compelling narratives based on underlying data to help business users understand complex correlations and trends.
- Experience creating iterative wireframe designs in modern collaboration tools such as Miro, Figma, or Mural.
- Microsoft Power BI Development certification desired.
- Ability to research, compile and generate working instructions, resources and/or training packages.
Salary range:
As of the post date, the salary range for this position is:90400.00 USD - 125000.00 USD
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
