GATX Corporation, founded in 1898, is the leading global railcar lessor. We own railcar fleets in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, we operate the largest fleet of US-flagged vessels on the Great Lakes and own and manage other long-lived, widely-used assets. We operate through four business segments: Rail North America, Rail International, Portfolio Management, and American Steamship Company (“ASC”).
Rail North America
We are the leader in railcar leasing, serving the North American rail market with a fleet of more than 120,000 railcars. The Locomotive Group has a fleet of more than 600 four-axle locomotives on lease to railroads and industrial users. Rail North America also owns an extensive network of maintenance facilities.
Rail International is composed of our operations in Europe ("GATX Rail Europe" or "GRE"), and wholly owned railcar leasing businesses in India ("Rail India"), and Russia ("Rail Russia"). GRE leases more than 24,000 railcars, predominantly tank cars, to customers throughout Europe
Rail India began operations in 2012 as the first company registered to lease railcars under the Indian Railways Wagon Leasing Scheme. As of December 31, 2017, Rail India owned over 1,000 railcars and entered into contracts to acquire approximately 350 additional railcars to be delivered in 2018.
Rail Russia established a wholly owned subsidiary in 2012, and as of December 31, 2017, owned over 150 railcars and had commitments to acquire approximately 165 railcars to be delivered in 2018. .
Portfolio Management is composed primarily of our ownership in a group of joint ventures with Rolls-Royce plc that lease aircraft spare engines, as well as five liquefied gas-carrying vessels..
American Steamship Company (“ASC”)
ASC operates the largest, state-of-the-art fleet of US-flagged vessels on the Great Lakes and strives to attain the highest levels of delivery efficiency, safety and environmental stewardship. ASC provides waterborne transportation of dry bulk commodities such as iron ore, coal, limestone aggregates, and metallurgical limestone. ASC, which became a part of GATX in 1973, has been moving vital cargo across the Great Lakes for more than a century.
