This position is responsible for actively managing 10-20,000 freight or tank cars across several of the GATX North American fleets which serve various key rail markets. Working with other groups within the GATX commercial team, the incumbent will make decisions surrounding lease structuring (rate, term other T’s&C’s), and remarketing opportunities across their fleets, and also is involved in new and secondary markets investment, and supply agreement allocation. The position works closely with the Sales, Structured Finance, Investment Analysis, Operations, Engineering/Quality, Service Delivery, and most other areas across GATX. 

 

While we are posting for both a Sr. Analyst, Portfolio Management and a Manager, Portfolio Management position, the title will be determined based on demonstrated experience and fit with the job qualifications.  Only one role, of these two, will be filled.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall lease renewal process for assigned product codes/fleets, including negotiating lease rates, terms, and conditions for expiring agreements.
    Establish target pricing and terms within Fleet Portfolio Management (FPM) guidelines and structure transactions to enhance value (e.g., early renewals, bundled transactions).
  • Monitor and interpret market conditions, customer trends, fleet requirements, and potential remarketing or release costs to inform renewal strategies.
  • Oversee the release process for non-renewed assets, including assessing future marketability and coordinating with Operations and Fleet Order Execution to optimize repair scope and minimize maintenance spend.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize fleet utilization, including defining appropriate levels of “ready cars” based on demand forecasts, expected releases, and idle fleet levels.
  • Partner with Sales, Operations, and Legal to enforce end-of-lease contractual provisions related to asset condition and cost recovery.
  • Lead or support strategic initiatives to maximize fleet returns and drive profitable growth across assigned fleets and broader portfolio segments.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Structured Transactions, Sales, Strategic Growth) to identify acquisition opportunities and support asset purchases for leaseback or redeployment.
  • Drive demand for available fleet by partnering with Sales to communicate availability, market insights, and creative deal structures to customers.
  • Provide input to or lead investment analysis supporting asset acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions.
  • Support development of short- and long-term revenue forecasts and portfolio planning activities.
  • Establish pricing guidelines for renewals and assignments, as well as remarketing assumptions to inform investment decisions.
  • Support management reporting on fleet performance, including idle availability, pricing effectiveness, and renewal outcomes.
  • Contribute to large or complex transactions by serving as a key deal team member, providing expertise and rationale related to equipment and portfolio considerations.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with focus in business or engineering, an MBA is preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience (rail industry or equipment leasing) preferred.
  • Entry-level knowledge of rail cars, their users, and their markets is required.
  • Understanding of basic principles of finance is required.
  • Basic knowledge of lease structuring and accounting, other deal experiences are a significant plus.

Travel requirements are flexible and will evolve as the individual defines his or her approach to the role. Travel may be a significant part of the job, and might be as frequent as 5 to 10 times per year.

 

This position is based in the Chicago Corporate office and considered hybrid with 60% in office attendance required. Minimal travel to maintenance facilities and industry committee meetings will be required, and employee must be physically able to climb on, inside, or under rail cars.

 

Salary range:

As of the post date, the salary range for this position is:
92700.00 USD - 131000.00 USD

This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.

This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
