Overview:

Position Purpose

 

The primary responsibility of this role will be to support the GATX India Private Limited (GIPL) by providing engineering expertise, which includes developing new wagon designs, providing mechanical engineering structural analysis, overseeing engineering structural analysis by consultants, providing project management, and engineering support in executing rail wagon purchasing, modifications and/or repairs.  Provide field troubleshooting services in cases involving structural or component failure and other operational issues. This position reports to GIPL and will also interact with the U.S. GATX Design Engineering Group who will provide guidance and training to aid in achieving the engineering objectives.

Key Activities

 

1.     Lead new wagon design development activity for the Indian market

 

·        Scan the environment for new design concepts

·        Develop concepts basis the industry requirement

·        Responsible for obtaining all approvals necessary including those from IR/ RDSO for making any design ready for investment

 

2.     Provide structural analysis on projects involving rail wagon design (new & existing) and design modifications. 

 

·        Evaluate design and integrity of rail wagon design being considered for investment. 

o   Perform classical analysis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and fatigue and fracture mechanics.

o   Oversee structural analysis performed by outside consultants. 

·        Evaluate rail wagon equipment, developing instructions and drawings for necessary modifications, ordering material and maintaining corresponding equipment records

·        Coordinate project activities and communicate with suppliers, customer service, fleet execution, fleet maintenance and external Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) and Indian Railways workshops, wagon manufacturers and customers for project execution. 

·        Lead or participate in on-site field trips in order to evaluate and obtain necessary design information of existing equipment.

·        Assist with cost estimating and capitalization on all design projects managed.

3.     Provide on-site inspection, field troubleshooting, and evaluation of rail wagon structure, specialty components and other equipment affecting rail wagon operation. 

·        Examine structural failures, equipment problems, product contamination issues, and general railcar operating problems.

·        Utilize both field data and engineering analysis to determine root cause analysis and verify repairs and/or modifications to rail equipment, develop the modification drawings/instruction

4.     Act as the technical / analytical resource to GIPL and GATX Design Engineering.

·        Consult with and support GIPL management on mechanical analysis in areas such as equipment evaluation, failure, repair integrity and equipment safety.

·        Perform ad-hoc, mechanical research and analysis on an as-needed to support commercial interests of GIPL

·        Provide presentations on various projects, equipment and technical issues to inform management as required

 

Interaction:

In addition to providing support to GIPL, this position interacts with GATX Design Engineering.  The position will also interface with Indian Railway officials including those in RDSO, rail wagon manufacturers and Railways maintenance and repair centers.  Customer interaction will be required to communicate if the rail wagons are suitable or can be made suitable for customer needs and market demands. 

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience required:

 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with 7-10 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with rail wagon design, shop operations, sales support, and knowledge of international standards like AAR, UIC etc.
  • Minimum 5 years of 3D CAD, preferably with Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, Finite Element Analysis, preferably with ANSYS. Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Software.  Minimum of 5 years of experience using Microsoft Excel to solve analytical problems.
  • Knowledge of Indian Rail wagon design environment, RDSO, and Association of American Railroads (AAR) regulations pertaining to railcar design/operations is highly desirable.

  • Full fluency in both English and Hindi is required.

 

Other:

 

  • Moderate as necessary to visit repair facilities, customers and attend industry meetings.
  • Must be physically able to climb on rail wagons to inspect damage and repair work.
  • Travel as needed between GIPL and GATX USA
